Expert Tips on Replacement Gilt Management: Boost Your Pig Farm’s Productivity!

Hey pig farmers and livestock pros! Want to level up your herd’s genetics and performance? Here’s a step-by-step guide to managing replacement gilts  like a boss. From selection to nurturing, these techniques ensure strong, healthy breeders. Let’s dive in!

1. Weaning Evaluation (Piglets at Weaning):
When piglets are weaned, conduct a genetic assessment for each litter. Select candidate replacement pigs from the core group’s offspring. Prioritize individuals from litters with high maternal and reproductive indices. Tag these top picks with unique ear tags to stand out from the rest. No shortcuts here—genetics matter!

2. Pre-Nursery Screening (Around 10 Weeks Old):
Before moving candidates out of nursery, screen them again. Remove tags from any underdeveloped or non-breeding-quality pigs. Transfer the keepers to a dedicated growing-finishing area. Pro tip: NEVER sell these candidates before performance testing—no matter what! Keep your future stars safe.

3. Performance Testing (Around 160 Days or 85-115 kg):
At this stage, run full performance tests, genetic evaluations, and on-site selections. Based on breeding ratios and needs, select pigs for the replacement group—aim for 1.2-1.5 times your actual demand (1.5x in hot summers, 1.2x otherwise). Immediately test blood for PRRS antibodies (or pooled antigen), CSF antibodies, and pseudorabies antibodies. Discard any that fail—health first!

4. Entering the Replacement Phase (Post-Selection at ~160 Days):
Once tested and approved, input their performance data into your farm management software. Move them to isolated replacement sheds for group rearing—separate boars and gilts. This is where the real nurturing begins!

5. Specialized Diet Kickoff:
Switch to a custom replacement pig ration right after transfer. Amp up protein, calcium, phosphorus, fat-soluble vitamins, and trace minerals—way higher than standard grower-finisher feed. Fuel them for breeding success!

6. Controlled Feeding for Optimal Growth:
Limit intake to prevent overconditioning. For gilts (90-120 kg), cap daily gain at under 650g; for boars, under 750g. Feed 2.5-3.0 kg daily, tweaking based on body condition. Avoid fat or skinny pigs—balance is key!

7. Water and Exercise Essentials:
Ensure unlimited clean water access. If possible, provide space for movement to keep them fit and healthy. Hydration + activity = happy, productive pigs!

8. Lighting Protocol:
From 160 days onward, give them 16 hours of light daily. This boosts development and reproductive readiness. Simple tweak, big results!
